Our Program
We offer a broad, but rigorous, interdisciplinary education. Both the undergraduate and graduate degrees draw on courses and expertise from more than thirty participating departments, centers, and other units on campus, emphasizing the earth and natural sciences as well as the social sciences and humanities. Students can also take advantage of many opportunities for less-formal "real-world" learning, including internships for class credit.

Mine tailings adjacent to Colorado wetlands
Mine tailings adjacent to wetlands that drain into Lake Fork Creek, Lake County Colorado. The Dinero Tunnel has discharged acidic, metal-enriched water into this wetland for almost a century. Monitoring by INSTAAR scientists of seasonal changes in the outflow from the Dinero Tunnel and in Lake Fork Creek showed that the wetland acted as a sink for metals in summer, but was a source of metals during the winter and fall. Leaching of these tailings by melting snow released a pulse of concentrated metals into the creek. These studies show the hydrologic challenges of using constructed wetlands to remediate acid mine draiange in mountain environments. Photo: Diane McKnight (CEAE, ENVS, & INSTAAR).

El Niño Could Play a Role in Colorado’s Winter Weather, CU-NOAA Scientist Says
El Niño, a warming event of the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean that affects weather patterns in the United States and elsewhere, has strengthened in recent months and already appears to have influenced Colorado's fall weather, says Klaus Wolter, an atmospheric scientist with the University of Colorado at Boulder and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
