Research on Adapting to Climate Change: Are We Asking the Right Questions?

Lisa Dilling, Assistant Professor, ENVS/CIRES

ABSTRACT - The past few years have seen a rapid increase in interest in adaptation research, as well as on the ground planning in several countries. These efforts range from attempting to predict future climate impacts on regional scales to examining concepts of vulnerability across scales and sectors. Some of the most important barriers to effective adaptation, however, may lie in the arenas of policy, decision making, and tradeoffs. Moreover, over time society has not sought to eliminate risk, but rather has tolerated it in very different ways and with different outcomes in the face of climate-related events. This talk will frame some of the recent climate change adaptation discussion in light of past work on natural hazards and usable science.

Invited Commentators:

Balaji Rajagopalan, CU Department of Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering
Steve Vanderheiden, CU Department of Political Science

A reception will start at 4:00 pm in the CIRES auditorium (338), with the talk beginning at 4:30 PM .
