Marcie Bidwell, Executive Director, Mountain Studies Institute; Emily Olson, Education Coordinator, Mountain Studies Institute
Marcie Demmy Bidwell serves as MSI’s Executive Director and program manager for Climate Planning and Wetlands programs. Marcie specializes in restoration, community engagement and facilitation, environmental education and project management. In the past, Marcie has served as a planning consultant and project manager for an environmental consulting company in the Durango area. Emily Olson serves as MSI’s Education Coordinator providing experiential, place-based education programs that involve students and citizens in real mountain science. Having taught at Gorge Discovery School, in Hood River, Oregon; Durango Educational Alliance for Multicultural Achievement, in Durango, Colorado; and the Journeys School of the Teton Science Schools, in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Emily brings a wide variety of skills and experiences to MSI. She is passionate about working with people from diverse backgrounds to foster understanding of the connection between the mountains and one's home. Emily draws upon Socrates quote for inspiration in her work 'Wisdom Begins In Wonder.' The Mountain Studies Institute is an independent not-for-profit mountain research and education center established in 2002 in Silverton, CO. MSI develops science that people can use to address environmental issues facing the San Juan Mountains, conducting and facilitating research, educational opportunities and internships, and environmental monitoring. MSI connects scientists and stakeholders across the San Juan Mountain region to go beyond scientific inquiry to the meaningful application of knowledge that makes a difference for the quality of the environment.
