Patty Limerick, 58, is the official University Fool at the University of Colorado at Boulder. She's held the position since 1988, and it looks like she'll keep it, if only because no one else seems to want it. She is probably the only University Fool in the world, a position she also held at Yale and Harvard. Her self-prescribed assignment is to bring some levity to a campus that takes itself pretty darn seriously. Every April 1, she puts on clown makeup and hits the campus with a grin. But Limerick is no fool when it comes to academics: She's a renowned history professor, faculty director and board chair of the Center of the American West, and a recent winner of a MacArthur Fellowship, the "genius grant." She was widowed five years ago and has since remarried.
