Colorado River in the Grand Canyon

Boaters view of the Grand Canyon during a water sampling trip to study groundwater sources of seeps and springs, Arizona, November 2003. One participant was Bruce Vaughn (INSTAAR) who runs the Stable Isotope Lab headed by James White (ENVS, Geological Sciences, & INSTAAR faculty). A cooperative team of researchers from USGS, INSTAAR, Center for Disease Control, and Colorado Mountain College rowed the Canyon in a hydrologic field sampling effort aimed at better understanding the ground water sources of seeps and springs that feed the canyon. It is unclear whether increased ground water pumping on the developing Coconio Plateau to the South is tapping into the same sources that may feed the sensitive ecosystem in the Grand Canyon. Photo.
