Shoshoni and Pawnee peaks at sunrise from the D1 climate station on Niwot Ridge on summer solstice, June 21, 1991. A strong upslope storm bathed everything but the highest peaks in clouds. The Niwot Ridge Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) study area encompasses several thousand acres of tundra, talus slopes, glacial lakes and wetlands straddling the Continental Divide 35 miles northwest of Boulder. Its research facilities are operated by the CU Mountain Research Station, part of the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research (INSTAAR). A number of ENVS faculty members are performing research on Niwot Ridge including Peter Blanken, Diane McKnight, Jason Neff, Diana Nemergut, Alan Townsend, James White, and Mark Williams.
