Tom Yulsman is an associate professor at the University of Colorado's School of Journalism & Mass Communication, where he co-directs the Center for Environmental Journalism. He also is affiliated with CU's Environmental Studies Program.
Yulsman is a science journalist with more than 20 years of experience writing for major publications, including the New York Times, Washington Post, Discover, Audubon and Astronomy. His journalistic work focuses on the earth and environmental sciences, astronomy, astrophysics and cosmology. Prior to joining the journalism school's faculty in 1996, Yulsman was editor-in-chief of Earth magazine. Until it's closure in 1998, Earth was the only consumer magazine dedicated to the science of our planet. His book, "Origins: the quest for our cosmic roots," was published by the Institute of Physics in 2003.
Yulsman is a co-PI in the Carbon, Climate and Society Initiative. CCSI is an interdisciplinary graduate education and research program at the University of Colorado that integrates natural science, social science and journalism perspectives on key issues of global environmental change, with an emphasis on the changing carbon cycle and climate system. The CCSI program includes faculty and students from nine departments and schools on campus.
As co-director of the Center for Environmental Journalism, Yulsman helps oversee a variety of programs for working journalists and journalism students. He teaches a number of journalism courses, including Science Writing and Magazine Feature Writing.
