Lorine graduated from the University of Virginia in 2002 with a major in environmental sciences and a focus in ecology. After college she completed thru-hikes of the Appalachian Trail, the Pacific Crest Trail, and the Continental Divide Trail, and she worked as an experiential and outdoor educator. Lorine's graduate work focuses on water quality problems associated with agricultural activity, and her dissertation research demonstrates an interdisciplinary approach to estimating the cost of achieving certain water quality improvements in an agricultural watershed. The title of Lorine's dissertation is "The cost of cleaner water: Linking farmer incentives to conservation outcomes."
