Emily graduated from the University of Michigan with a B.F.A. (drawing and painting) and a B.G.S. (General Studies). She spent the next few years traveling internationally and roasting coffee at a fair trade, organic small business. At CU, she worked with the Stable Isotope Lab at INSTAAR, with Jim White as her advisor. She focused her research on carbon cycling and biogeochemistry.
