Advice on Registering

Registration Advising

During most times of year, you can get an advising appointment within two weeks. However, there are two times of year when this is not true:

• mid-March through April (registration for the upcoming fall)
• mid-October through November (registration for the upcoming spring)

At these times, all students seem to want advising appointments for registration advice, and before you know it, the first available appointment is three or even four weeks away.

Advisors wish they could meet with each of you during the registration period, but they have hundreds of advisees, so this would mean holding appointments with more than 30 students a day for an entire month. Obviously, that’s not possible.

Tools for Registration

1) The ENVS course list is posted on the ENVS website.

2) You track your ENVS classes using an ENVS major tracking sheet Seniors: Use the statement of major status from the graduation application to track your remaining ENVS requirements (pink sheet).

3) You can plan your schedule and find CORE classes on Schedule Planner.

4) MAPS, CORE and CREDITS progress is posted on DARS in CU Connect. ENVS is not on DARS. Use the tracking sheet (#2) for ENVS progress. DARS insructions.

5) CU Connect posts registration times.

So, what should you do if you’re unable to get an advising appointment before your registration date?

Plan A
If your advisor is holding group meetings, and you have been invited to one of these meetings, attend one. You will have an opportunity to ask questions then.

If you have not been invited to a group meeting, send your advisor a clearly written email with all of your questions. This may be a good way to confer before you register. Advisors try to respond to emails within three work days.

Continue checking for new appointments. New appointments are posted most work days.

Plan B
If you have complicated questions or need a personal appointment for other reasons, you should:

  1. Make an appointment now for the first available date that works with your schedule, even though it will be after your registration date.
  2. Use Schedule Planner to plan a schedule for the upcoming term.
  3. When your registration date comes, register for classes.
  4. Attend your scheduled advising appointment to review your schedule and make any necessary changes.

Alternatively, you could wait till after your advising appointment to register, but some classes you wanted may have filled in the interim, so that is not the best approach.

Finally, don't forget that in future semesters, you can make an advising appointment before the registration madness begins. This requires advance planning on your part, but is the best strategy.

Walk-in Advising Policy
If walk in advising hours are available they are posted on the Advising website. Due to the large number of Environmental Studies students, limited walk-in advising sessions are available.
